Acklam (Home)
2-0
This was a home match versus Acklam and the very last game of the season played amongst the sea mist and some sunshine with very little wind on a good firm pitch.
This turned out to be a good contest with a much improved Acklam side and they made it hard for us. In a first half we managed to create a few half chances and our defence was again rock solid with keeper Walters having virtually nothing to do. It seemed as though a scoreless first half was on the cards when Saltburn were given a free kick deep but inside the opposition half. The kick was taken by Hoggard who struck the ball cleanly as it went high with a curve towards goal. Hudson went up to challenge for the ball with the keeper and both missed it as the ball sailed into the net.
There was a sense of relief from players and parents alike and the half time score was 1-0. There was some sense of frustration with both sets of players regarding the refereeing decisions some of which were bizarre. The second half continued and Saltburn were taking control and the pressure was on their defence and keeper. Several long range efforts just cleared the bar and an open goal didn't help, but with such a strong defence of Graham, who was outstanding, along with Axe and Whitfield and a returning Hitchen easily coping and with the influential Whiley and hard working Blue in central midfield with Atkinson also making good contributions. Up front Clark and Hudson continually caused problems and all players available greatly contributing as players were subbed on a regular basis to enable all to have a game. Hoggard, Ward, Waller, Caird and Williams and Walters all played their part in a solid team performance. The final goal eventually came late in the game when an excellent cross by Whiley was met by Clark who steered the ball past the onrushing keeper. A final score of 2-0 was good enough to consolidate our fourth position overall.
MOM was Graham. The game ended in a little controversy as the referee had continued to make mystifying decisions which caused two players to be booked as some players frustrations were taken out against each other in what had been a good contested match.
