Sunday 7/2/10 was an away game at St
Francis (Hartlepool) on a grey and dismal day. The pitch was
heavy particularly down the middle. Thankfully the morning rain
had subsided.
This was never going to be a game of
flowing football. The Saltburn team began well and should have
been in front early when two players missed an opportunity to
score. These were sitters and it was harder to miss the goal and
this continued when several other opportunities went begging and
although the opposition played slightly the better football they
only created a couple of chances. We should have had this game
sown up by half time and instead we went in at 0-0. The second
half continued when again we squandered chances and were
eventually punished when they scored what was to be the vital
winner. We again missed when easier to score. This is a game the
team will want to forget and the coaches were left to pull their
hair out. To be fair they played slightly better and wanted to
win but too many Saltburn players were uncompetitive and too few
passed with any real credit. when you are losing you need to up
the game and this did not happen. Man of the match went to
William Walters who perhaps didn't have that much to do but did
pull off a couple of good saves and was competent but was unable
to prevent their goal. Some players at least were angry with
themselves but others need to look at themselves and be more
honest.
