 21st Allstars (Home) 3-2

A perfect evening for a game of football with sun and no wind.  The opposition were 21st Allstars from Darlington who had already secured promotion but had to win this game to claim the Division 3 title.

We again started slowly out of the blocks and were under pressure from the off and this continued and it was no surprise when they took the lead when some poor defending allowed them behind our defence to score past our helpless keeper. We did manage to cause a problem when Caird challenged their keeper for a high ball but his header came back off the post. They continued to press and from a corner their player rose unchallenged to head home. At this stage only Graham and Hitchin were holding their own at the back as the other two defenders hadn't woken from their slumbers. We went in at half time 2-0 down and were fortunate that was all it was.

The second half started and we needed to get going and albeit slowly we were now winding things up and began putting pressure on their defence. The pressure was beginning to tell as they became jittery and losing some self discipline. Eventually the goal came when Whiley received a through ball and fought off two defenders before sliding the ball past the keeper. This was the incentive we needed and the pressure mounted and Clark finished off a move to make the score 2-2. We kept trying and in the dying minutes of the game a long throw from Whiley caused confusion in their defence and the ball came off the opposition and hit the framework to bounce up invitingly and it seemed an age as they froze and Clark calmly headed in to make 3-2. We ran down the clock and emerged victorious.

This was a truly excellent comeback and showed what we are well capable off. There were excellent performances from Whiley, Blue, Walters, Hitchin and Waller but MOM went to Graham for some great defending.
