Sunday 28/03/10

Darlington TSC (away)  0-2

This was a rather dismal day with some sunny periods but not so warm. On a firm but good pitch Saltburn played away to Darlington TSC. If Saltburn win this game Darlington would be relegated. Although it is mathematically still possible even a win could not guarantee a promotion for the Saltburn team. The Team started with only ten men as six were unavailable due to injury ,illness etc. After ten minutes Saltburn's eleventh man eventually turned up. The score was still 0-0 and the strong wind made this game a bit of a lottery with Saltburn playing against the wind in the first half which meant a lot of work for the back four of Williams, Whitfield, Graham and Axe and they held firm as did the keeper Walters who had to make some good saves. There were some half chances for Saltburn but the opposition keeper saved all too easily. This was not a particularly good performance against a weaker team and the half time whistle blew with the score line at 0-0.

The wind was now with Saltburn but we just could not control the ball well enough. The opposition made some useful breakaways but could not convert their chances as Saltburn kept pressing. Eventually the pressure told when from a corner the Darlington defence dithered and Clark finally hammered the ball home. Both teams continued to struggle with the wind. Saltburn then scored their second when a through ball to Naughton caught out the opposition and Naughton duly nudged the ball past the keeper. Some other chances came and went but there were no further goals so a full time result of 2-0 was sufficient. This result at least stopped the rot of losing games.  There were good performances from the keeper and back four and Clark never stopped running. Naughton, having played a full rugby match in the morning had tired legs. Thanks to all those who played. Man of the match was shared by Graham and stand in left back Axe.
