With the
pitch sloping significantly from one half to the
other Saltburn chose to take advantage and kick
downhill hoping to capitalize early on. Whitby
had other ideas. Saltburn managed to get the
ball forward and create a number of chances, a
good portion of the play coming through the
industrious midfielder Oliver Moore, but Whitby
defended stoically, and obviously at home with
the conditions, weren't averse to having a pop
at the Saltburn goal now and again.
That wasn't in the script! Both teams enjoyed possession but Saltburn left the field at half time feeling they should have capitalized on those chances.
Whitby came out in the
second half, a team itching to score some goals and
egged on by an enthusiastic crowd, made several
forays into the Saltburn box. But the Saltburn
defence weren't gonna roll over and let it happen.
Led by debutant centre half Jed Blair, they cleared
everything coming at them. When Whitby did manage to
break them down Lewis Parkin in goal was always
there to make the crucial saves.
And it wasn't all Whitby. The whole Saltburn team had a determined 'backs to the wall' attitude. Referees man of the match Isaac Gallon proved effective both at the back and going forward; Craig Hadden had several chances falling the wrong side of the post. For the neutral this was superb entertainment; as good as any game without goals can get. We look forward to the return match. |
